The effect of interleukin-2 on experimental emotional hypertension]

The effect of human recombinant interleukin-2, one of the potent mediators of the immune system, on the course of emotional hypertension in non-linear white rats has been investigated. A significant and prolonged hypotensive action of a single injection of interleukin-2 in hypertensive rats has been revealed. The data obtained can be a new evidence of participation of immune system in the development of hypertension in experimental animals.     

Merkel cell tumor of the back detected during pregnancy

Merkel cell tumor is an unusual, aggressive malignancy of skin that has been considered to be derived from cutaneous Merkel cells. We are reporting a case of Merkel cell tumor overlying the left scapula with metastases to the thoracic spine and pleura. The tumor was found incidentally in a 23-year-old pregnant black woman. The tumor recurred locally 5 months after initial wide excision. Subsequently, a second wide excision of the recurrent tumor with ipsilateral axillary dissection was performed. The course of the disease was complicated by local recurrence and formation of distant metastases to pleura and spine. At the end-stage of the disease, the patient was found to have a cardiac murmur, and echocardiography revealed a mass in the anterior wall of the right ventricle that was suspicious for a metastatic lesion. The patient expired from extensive distant metastases 23 months after diagnosis.     

Characterization of insulin receptors in primary cultures of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) oviduct cells. The level of insulin receptor is regulated by steroid and peptide hormones

1. We have characterized the insulin receptor in primary cultured quail oviduct cells and examined the hormonal regulation of its level. 2. We have also shown the recycling pathway of insulin receptors in the cultured cells using specific inhibitors (tunicamycin, chloroquine, monensin, and brefeldin A). 3. Our data suggest that glucocorticoids play important physiological roles in egg-white protein synthesis through increasing the number of insulin receptors and insulin through enhancing the transport of amino acids.     

Fine mapping of the MLK-3 gene within 11q13 and its exclusion as the MEN1 susceptibility gene

MLK-3 kinase is a widely expressed serine/ threonine kinase that bears multiple protein interaction domains and regulates signals mediated by the stress-responsive pathway. Thus, MLK-3 signaling affects numerous cellular processes, raising the possibility that MLK-3 might play a role in oncogenesis. In this report, we describe the fine mapping of the MLK-3 gene within the 11q13.1 chromosomal region. By integrating data from somatic cell hybrids and double color fluorescence in situ hybridization on metaphase chromosomes and DNA fibers, MLK-3 has been assigned approximately 1 Mb telomeric of PYGM, close to the D11S546 locus. Since the MEN1 susceptibility locus is also located within the 11q13.1 region, we have carried out Southern and Northern blot analyses, as well as protein truncation assays to establish whether abnormalities in MLK-3 lead to the development of this familial cancer syndrome.
